with speakers it shouldn’t matter.. household wiring the white is neutral, black is positive, and green is ground.. sometimes red is an alternative for positive.. but with speakers and certain other small devices it doesn’t matter just hook them up the same on both ends…

The color issue has been answered by others. About the wires that aren’t colored, examine them carefully. Other methods of marking wires are to put ridges, or even just one ridge, on the insulation over one of the conductors. Another method is to put a thin thread in with one of the conductors. A more obvious method is to tin one wire so it will be silver colored and the other copper colored.

If you can’t see a colour, say on a lamp cord the side with the ridges is the negative (white). If a speaker isn’t labelled & you want to know which one is positive and which is negative, tap a 9v battery on the speaker terminals. You want the cone to go out. The positive terminal of the 9v battery will correspond to the positive lead of the speaker, when the cone goes out (it’ll move in if you have them reversed).
