How can I detect if there are any electrical wiring or panels behind dry wall?

Inseguro asked:
I need to drill a hole in some dry wall and mount an anchor hook to hang a 30+lb fire extinguisher. I am concerned about any electrical wiring or panels behind the dry wall. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Some of the newer stud finders on the market have a hot electrical wire locator built in.
e.g.
Take a trip to your favorite hardware/lumber center and see what they have available.
I know my next stud finder purchase will probably include this option.

your not allowed to hide a panel or box behind plaster or drywall. As for the wiring any wires going thru a wall stud is supposed to have a metal plate over it. ( this rule is almost never followed). But i would drill anyway because its got to get done. better on a stud though because 30 lbs is a lot of weight.

USA You should mount the unit on a stud, not a drywall anchor. That way, you need not worry about wiring. If you do not mount the unit on a stud, you are stupid and deserve the consequences.
