try disconnecting the large wire to the starter, then reconnecting the battery. If ok, then the starter is probably shorted. The GM starters in the 90s were good for that.

sounds like a dead short to ground, the sparks and heat are from a major draw, look over cables to see if there is a bare spot contacting ground, possible that started solinoid is staying energized
