Anyone else in this situation?
I’m a 22 year old college graduate, and I can’t find a job of any sort. About the only thing available to me is working at Walmart or McDonald’s for minimum wage. I could do this without a degree, or a high school diploma for that matter. I feel like I’ve wasted time I can’t get back on a useless degree. I admit this is no one’s fault but my own, I shouldn’t have listened to those fool teachers and guidance counselors in high school. College is just a scam, unless you’re going into engineering or a medical field.
I’m thinking about becoming an electrician, would this help me actually make more than minimum wage?
Thanks.

Yeah yo it would definitely help yo make more than minimum wage. What I recommend though, get licensed. I’m working on a double major on business and finance right now, one class left, and all I know that whatever you get into, the more licenses you have, the more cash you’ll be bringing in

I actually am in your exact same position. I have a degree in Graphic Design and the only job I have managed to land is at Office Max’s copy center. And I had to FIGHT to get into that position (they wanted me on the retail side because that’s what I had history in!!) I am with you on saying college is a scam. I went to a private school that supposedly had above average learning. I get there and it’s basically a “Do it Yourself” school with no career department whatsoever! I wish there was some way that you could prove to them your degree doesn’t mean **** and that you would like your tuition money back. I might be in debt for the rest of my life now JUST BECAUSE I WENT TO COLLEGE!!

I completely understand how you feel because I have been there John. You have to stay positive at this time when it is so easy to be down on yourself. You may only be able to get a job at McDonald’s or Walmart right now (which you can get without a degree) but, what will set you aside from all the other is that piece of paper. Do your absolute best at whatever menial job they give you. Once you have proved that you are a hard worker and an invaluable employee, your degree will allow you stand out from the rest when you apply for the management positions.

Yes, becoming an electrician will definitely help.
I got my college degree over 10 years ago. Despite high honors, I was never able to find a career. I have watched so many people with degrees struggle, while I have seen those who did not get a degree land great jobs with security.
I am currently enrolled in a certification class at my local community college. I needed a BA to get in, but they also offer the Associate’s degree. There are 4 of us in the class with BAs who are all in the same boat. None of us have found careers. Apparently, it is a trend now, getting a BA and then going back to school because your BA was not marketable.
I am of the very strong opinion that if your degree is in a general or broad area, you are out of luck….unless you have a connection to a good job through friends or family.
College is a business. It only “serves” those who get specific degrees, like nursing or engineering. Those of us who do not have wasted time and money; that is a fact. You have to have a needed and specific degree. Employers do not want general degrees, they want to know that you have the skills they need. If you pick up any newspaper and look at the want ads, you will see ads that say degree OR experience.
I highly suggest you get your electrician’s license. You need to do that, or another skill, or try to get in now with a company and work your way up, which is hard, as you have found out. If you don’t get the experience or a real skill, you will have a very hard time finding a true career. Trust me on this. I have had some nice job experiences, but never a really good career. And I have tried. I have lost out more than I can count to either those with connections (and no degrees) or those with more experience. If I had to do this all over again, I would never go for the BA; I would get a certification/skill through the community college. My niece is doing that and next year, she will graduate with a small loan (when compared to BA loans) and start out at a very decent salary. She can always go on to a BA if she wants, but she will have a solid career with this degree alone in less time and at much much less of a cost.
I think more people are starting to realize what a scam college can be….but don’t let the college counselors or profs hear you say that. They all mislead or lie and do it very well.
Good luck to you!
