Electric meter (UK) buzzes all the time, particularly at night?
My electric meter is just outside the bedroom doors and buzzes especially loudly at night. It buzzes all the time, but ‘clunks’ (loud enough to wake us) at about midnight and again at about 8am, presumably from when the previous occupants had night storage heaters (?). Do you think this means the meter is dangerous? It’s the part which belongs to the electricity company; not the consumer unit, which makes the noise. Should I ask an electrician about it at my own expense or the electricity company since it’s their equipment? Thanks.

sussex electric
electric company,
sussex electrician
This is called economy 7 (for the 7 hours ish “off peak” electric) There are a few ways this was done. One was to have a contactor (electrically operated switch) that puts power to the storage heaters during the off peak hours. This is what clunks.
As for the buzzing, I doubt its the meter. If it is then the local utility should replace it. Its more likely to a contactor associated with the economy 7. The buzzing doesn’t necessarily mean there is a safety issue.
One way you may get you answer is ask the meter reader, most of those people have seen a lot of systems so can advise (unofficially, of course). The utility company should be able to send someone to advise anyway if its their equipment so better to do this before paying an electrician.
