How do you make an electric motor turn the opposite way without switching the wires?
I have a ford marine engine, and the starter is mounted backwards. I bought a new starter from an autoparts store but it rotates the wrong way for this engine and I don’t want to pay $200 more for the same starter that rotates counterclockwise from a marine parts dealer.
I bought the new starter for $30. I don’t want to pay $190 for one that turns the opposite way.
The new one is identical in appearance to the old one, so I don’t know what you mean about spark protection because all the wires are attached the same.

Try reverse polarizing the field coils.

Your problem is your buying automotive parts for a marine application. If you went to a marine supplier and bought correct starter it probably would have been cheaper than the price you got ..Arco makes a marine starter thats reasonably priced.
Another alternative is to find a local rebuilder in your area and have them change it.
Also automotive starter in a marine application is dangerous.
They offer no spark protection from inside the starter motor

It cannot be emphasised too strongly that MARINE starters, alternators, blowers and other electrical components MUST be used on a vessel because of their superior spark supression as well as other features!
For proof of what can happen when “auto parts” are substituted for marine applications, check out this video from Transport Canada…
Good Luck!
