Great money and benefits if you are in a union. It takes a long time to become an electrician though. You have to be an apprentice and work your way up– I believe it takes approx. 5 years.

Go into air conditioning work instead. Check with the local colleges/votechs in you area and see what classes they have in electrical work. Even if you never go into it as a career the knowledge will come in handy all your life.
