Does UK made light switch work in the US?
I’m doing an old house up in the States and finding out that the availability of certain things are very limited here.
Now, I’m thinking to buy 3-gang dimmer switches that made in the UK, but I am so dumb on electrical stuff and wondering if it will ever work here.
If it does, is it a simple thing to install by an electrician who has never seen a UK switches??
Any info will be much appreciated.
Thank you!
The example of what I have in mind is something similar to this ↓

The simple answer is that it should work. Most light switches are rated for by volts which is different than the hertz differential between the UK (50) and US (60). However, if you are having a hard time finding what you want, I think you are probably just looking the wrong places. I work for a national electrical distributor, and there is not much that you can’t get in electrical components in the states. I would suggest you go the safer route by trying to track down some lighting controls. One company that is more innovative is Cooper. If you want more info, call a local distributor (not a home improvement store). You should also know that any electrician should be able to figure out how to wire a switch on their own, but in most cases, there are actually instructions that come with the hardware.

I did electrical work in the UK and I’ve done a lot of it here, and I wouldn’t risk it. There are a lot of good dimmers in the US (try Lutron at one of the large box stores) and that’s the kind of thing you should use in this country.
