Will I have low qualifications being an Electrician’s Mate in the Navy?
I joined the navy as an EM. And the other day, someone was giving me hell, for chosing an EM job. The reason I chose that job is because as of now I have a green card( permanent resident), and I would say that 90% of the naval jobs are open only to U.S. citizens, including OCS- I will have a bachelor’s degree soon after A school. So I figured at least until I receive my cityizenship ( in 3 years) I could have a job that I can bring to the civilian world. But the person said, that was the stupidest idea I could have, that as an EM when I get out I will only be as good as this kid I know that dropped out of high school, and now lays power lines. Another thing he said was, I will never amount to be an officer, because all naval officers come out of Annapolis, and the only way me as an enlisted to have any opportunity to OCS is by going to war, even by having the BBA.
Is a naval electrician really that poorly qualified?
Will I never be able to go to OCS?
The idiot broke my MORALE!!

Why did you listen to the fool. As an EM you are learning the basics of Electrical and circuit flow. With that you will be very marketable when you get out. Ever hear of a public utility or a power plant? Don’t ever let anyone break your moral. If you have time, sign up for all the courses you can and get your degree, so you will have a college education to back up your experience that you will be gaining. By the way, I can tell you from personal experience, working storm duty is serious money. We were so grateful to see those guys laying power lines in Florida. 5 days with no power in August is not fun. I could have hugged the whole crew. I have brother who loves that storm duty pay. His son is going for his masters and dad is paying for everything.

Being an EM in the Navy is a good job and useful should you decide later on not to make the navy a career.
There are other paths to a commision besides direct accession to OCS or Annapolis. The idiot that told you there was no other way to become an Officer has no clue what he is talking about.
I was a high school dropout when I joined the Navy at 17. My company Commander told me 87% of non high school graduates never complete their first enlistment. Well not only did I complete my enlistment, I made the Navy a carreer and retired as a Chief Petty Officer at age 40. I now live in the Philippines very comfortably on my retirement check alone.
There is nothing you can’t do if your willing to work hard and set goals.
The same idiots who told me I was crazy for moving to the Philippines are the same ones that will be working like a dog until they are 67. So who is the idiot ? I would be if I listened to the naysayers.
