RCD Keeps tripping new consumer unit?

truepower asked:

After 2 days of searching for the carpenters nail through my cable all was fine. Final fix completed and the decorators put the kettle on and the circuit tripped. Different circuit now thats developed a problem.

Any small items phone chargers etc fine, kettle or the oven on and the RCD trips. This is a house converted into two flats. If the kettle is plugged into the top flat then the RCD trips in the downstairs flat!!!

I’m a recently qualified electrician just about to sit my 17th edition exam (monday) and haven’t done my inspection and test course yet. Can anyone help me with this fault as i’m a bit baffled on this one.

Thanks
Kellie

jae_bonn618 asked:

I asked that question because i was seeking home owners insurance with another company and they asked me that question. My electrical outlets in the house are 3 prong and when I looked in the panel box on the switches I saw that it said 120/240v I am not sure if that is what I should be looking at as far how much amps of power is coming in. I just wanted to know how what answer i would give the insurance agent as to what type of wiring was in the home. I may just call an electrician. Thanks for all the answers thus far.

Ricardo Umbro asked:

New electrical wiring (in aluminum piping) on the wall passes very close to and crosses heating pipes that are copper. The copper pipes (from the boiler) give out a lot of heat, would that damage or in any way cause problems with the electrical wiring that is in electrical tubing?

What is the cause of dryer not working?

Lighthearted asked:

Can you help me understand what might be the cause of why a renter in my house cannot get her new dryer to work? The very reliable electrician/handyman who has a done a ton of electrical work for me says it is because her dryer does not work; he tried to help her install but told her the dryer does not work. So she hires a person to look at the dryer and he says the houseelectrical connections are broken . That makes no sense to me because my guy would know that and he always tells me things that are wrong because I pay him well no problems to fix anything. So I suspect this serviceman my renter hired is wrong. My electrician is going back to look at things but I wonder what do you think the problem is? It does not make sense it is electrical because my guy would have known. If my guy says it’s the dryer, do I tell my renter to get another person to look at her dryer? My electrician does not know appliances, but he knows electrical. Do you have any suggestions what I should do

Charlene W asked:

This is a house built in around the 40’s, main floor and basement. There is the kitchen, 2 bedrooms, living room and bathroom on the main floor. There is one bedroom, utility room, laundry room, and family room, mostly all unfinished. I live in Washington state. There is only heat in my son’s room downstairs but not enough to keep it warm in the winter. There is like 3 outlets in the living room, one or two in the bedrooms, two in the utility room, one in the family room, not as much as a modern house so I have to run those strips with all the outlet holes in them to plug everything up everywhere. Then there’s no heat in the family room and it gets so cold in there, I had to put a space heater in there and one in my son’s room down there too.
The breaker kept going off when I had the heater plugged in the family room where my daughter was sleeping so I plugged it in the utility room, over time, it arched and melted the outlet and the strip that it was plugged into at the other end;the extention cord was very hot!
When I use to have this cheap vacuum, the breaker never went off but once I got rid of it and got a very good vacuum and very powerful, it makes the breakers break and sometimes the vacuum runs suggishly.
The landlord doesn’t like it that I use that powerful vacuum but I feel it’s
not my fault I have a good vacuum, he needs to fix the electrical but he consulted with his electrician that says everything is fine. I have 3 kids in this house and don’t want it to burn down with us in it. I also
wanted to add that the wiring seems to be screwed up because when the breaker goes when I’m vacuuming, the frig, my son’s things in his room in the basement, and different things in different parts of the house go off. Seems like one or two things per room don’t have power when it happens. Is this house dangerous?
