What type/size of electrical cable do I need for lights/sockets (uk)?

I have existing electical wiring in my garage and need to move some sockets/lightswitches. The builder asked me to get some electrical cabling but never specified what and there is loads to chose from. There was no electrician at the B&Q I went to to help! Can anyone give me some pointers?
