I’m in the military and I just earned Staff Sergeant (Air Force E-5 last spring). As a result, my boss gave me a subordinate (the first new guy to join the shop). As it turns out, my bosses assistant taught this guy in technical training school and already knew the guy was a complete dope! I’ve hung out with the dude before but mostly in a supportive supervisor kind of role (like we’ll talk about work stuff over a drink).

The problem is, this guy has been here since September and he is just a real idiot. Like we are aircraft electricians right, and he has been in for over six years (I have only been in for like 5 1/2 but I am a rank above him). He has no idea how to do any work on the airplane. We both are pretty new to the base. I just got here about a year ago and spent a lot of time away from actual aircraft work. Like I said he just got here in September. The problem is, he came to the base fully qualified to work on this plane and he is totally uncapable. As a result, he was given a job in shop to manage our toolbox program and he keeps finding new ways to mess that up.

I am really starting to get pissed because now he is getting into trouble with other supervisors. The other day I had to stay back an hour after my 12-hour shift to keep him from getting reprimanded because he got mad at his shift supervisor and stormed out and slammed a door (not to mention he left equipment running). Then he went to take his physical training (PT) test (which is usually taken in the physical training uniform) wearing duty uniform pieces and PT uniform pieces. I mean my boss almost wouldn’t let him test because he wanted to run in a mechanic’s pair of coveralls, a military issued thermal sweater, the Air Force PT jacket. What really gets me is he finds a way to make everything somebody elses’ fault. I’ve handled him with kid gloves up to this part because he said he had suicidal thoughts once and he went to go sen a counselor on base when he first got here because he was having a hard time getting over how he was treated while he was stationed in Korea. But what do I do? He is gettting out of the military in August but I think he is going to get into serious trouble before then. Anyone else ever been the boss of a total idiot?
David C, ironic that you mention annual review. I just did his annual review and had already marked him down several spots for his duty performance. The incident with him slamming the door came two days latter and now I might have to mark him down another spot! That would be out of my hands because even if I wanted to my bosses won’t allow a perfect rating with paperwork on file ( I wouldn’t dream of giving it to him anyway).

“hurry the *** up.” zack whispered. We were standing in front if lincoln high school home of the hawks and rat was sweating like a pig. Zack had told him to hurry up but he was frozen. The cold breeze gave me the chills we were standing in front of a high school at 1 in the morning and it made me want to throw up as i thought about the whole reason we were there. It had all started 2 days ago on friday when i was in the office getting a late pass i over heard the secretary. “we need some one to fix the cameras what if there is a fight or some one decides to start the graffiti crap we wont be able to know who did it the electrician should have been here last week he never showed.” the secretary was a huge gossip so i don’t think she knew how to whisper. At the time i didn’t think much of it but when we were sitting at lunch and that awkward moment came when we had talked about the weather and what we were going to do after school and everything else under the sun and there was just that silence i decided to pitch in by telling them what i had heard. “Hey did you guys know the cameras are broken we can mess up all the walls that’s probably why we didn’t get caught when zack got into that fight.” They didn’t even care about how i knew but the three of them started hatching a plan i just sat and listened as they talked about all the stuff we could do. I studied them there was zack the skinny white boy who was mad at the world but was a loyal friend his blond hair didn’t fit with his baggy shorts his Jordan’s and his backward cap. Then there was rat he was short half chinese half Filipino and he loved messing with people and some people might think we called him rat because he was a snitch but it was really because he was quick and reliable you could trust him on anything from jacking fire works to having your back when you were getting jumped by 5 seniors. Then last but not least there was the brain he was like that guy spock he always did the logical thing he was a indian exchange student but like spock he had a human side so when push came to shove he put his friends above himself. Then there was me i was the fat black kid but i was also the second smartest in the group and the most reliable. hearing me describe our little 4 person group we might sound like the misfits but we are popular because we are nice to everyone. From the preps to the emos so people say was up to us we are kind of ike a branch off from the jocks i guess because we all play football but we are smarter than most of those other guys. After lunch we decided to skip since the cameras didn’t work and we went to brains house since his host parents were never home he drew up a plan of how we could vandalize the school. It was really simple all we had to do was get rat since he was the smallest to climb in through the little window of the old bathroom where kids went to smoke, and go and open the window of the first floor boys bathroom. Then we would jump in and go for the main office we would trash it spray paint it and egg it and now we were standing in front of the school. “be quiet your not the one who has to go in u *** nut.” muttered rat. He took a deep breath and then started climbing through the window and i felt so uneasy and paranoid now i knew we shouldn’t have smoked the weed. But it was to late to change that. It wasn’t to late to turn back and not vandalize the school and just as i was about to yell for him to stop and tell them we should just bail brain said what i was thinking. “Wait” he said in a whisper scream. “think about all the possibilities what if only some of the cameras are broken or they put new ones in yesterday it would be stupid to do this in the middle of the school year it is not worth getting caught.” i silently thanked brain for saving me from being labeled the wussy as rat jumped back out the window. And we ran around the school i knew that they had all been as scared as me even zack who hadn’t shown it. As we slinked through the basement window of my house i thought about how we were all to chicken to vandalize our own school.

I have had a reliable source (in a different union) tell me that there are janitors, electricians, and plumbers in at the DC who are outside contractors. What’s the point in the strike if the company can get away with this?

Ok, so I’m moving to Trinidad (Diego Martin area) from UK at the end of the year and need some information to help me along. It would be great to get replies. Here goes:

1) What is the cost of living in Trinidad?
2) What is the best internet provider (was looking for wireless)? Any recommedations. Also how much are laptops? are they fast?
4) was planning to bring down a tv and possible dvd player from UK will this work?(region2 dvd and Pal video)
3) Can anyone recommend a customs broker? Prices?
5) How much is childcare per hour? (with a childminder 0-8 year olds)
