Jeff Lander asked:

With the increasing interest in the home made electricity units, people are trying to determine whether to live off the grid is a wise choice. Surveys show that, a huge amount of people around the world have taken up the challenge of generating their own domestic power using windmills and solar panels. Living off the grid comes with the advantage of not having to pay unmanageable power bills and yet be a victim of frequent and unexpected power outages.

The most obvious and affordable solution, would be to try to generate your own power at your house. Contrary to the misgivings of most people, generating your own power at your house is both the most sensible and the cheaper way to go. Apart from avoiding heavy power bills, people also tend to save the environment from further deterioration. Use of batteries to store the power generated at home, helps to provide a continuous supply of energy.

Generating windmill power at home is very different from generating it at a wind station where they employ windmills with bigger blades. These blades require a stronger flow of air for their operation. The windmill power generators designed for domestic purposes with much lesser power production needs comes with thinner blades, thus requiring a much lesser flow of air for their successful operation.

The question of whether professional help is essential to set up your own residential power generation system must be answered now. While there are a lot of professional organizations which offer this help, they do not come at a cheap price. They cost a minimum of two thousand to three thousand bucks and a few more in the future for maintenance!

But for people who have little technical knowledge and who also want to, get off the grid there are several DIY or the Do It Yourself Kit which aims at providing step by step instructions , regarding the setting up of homemade power generation schemes. Some DIY manuals even go to the extent of mentioning all the equipments that are needed to build the system along with their prices. The equipment should be a few hundred bucks utmost.

The DIY manuals also educate one about the maintenance procedures required to keep the system, up and running at all times. Thus it helps, cut down on the cost that is usually spent on maintaining a professional domestic power generation unit.

By choosing to use their own domestic power generation system people reduce the amount of money spent on power bills. They get the freedom of living off the grid. They are free from unexpected power outages. They have the ability to even generate revenue if they produce surplus power. Further a DIY kit even helps them to install the windmill systems by themselves at home thus cutting down installation and maintenance charges. With all these advantages people get the opportunity to keep the environment clean.

Texas Electricity asked:

As a full-time energy analyst and business owner (www.ChooseEnergy.com), people always ask me – when is it a good time to lock in an electric rate?  Well, you can “fall” into lower electric rates if you lock in during the fall months.  There are peeks and valleys (head and shoulder) months in regards to energy prices.  Electric rates track closely with natural gas prices and historically the months during the fall are valleys or shoulder months which makes for a good curve when trying to determine when to lock in your electric rate.

So what should you do?  There still seems to be a premium on pricing out in 2012 and 2013 so I would recommend signing either a 12 or 24 month contract at the present time. This is where the rates are most attractive and the best time to end your contract during these same shoulder months so you can renegotiate during the low season.

Just as the Internet has made it easier for people to compare mortgages, travel rates and other services, ChooseEnergy.com has developed a compare and buy site that offers a trusted and objective comparison of available Texas electricity providers for residential and small commercial customers.  Not only do we select the providers that participate on our site, but we also show their most attractive rate plans for your home or business.  Plus, as I mentioned the fall season is a great time to lock in a lower Texas electricity rate.  Electricity prices usually track with natural gas costs, and natural gas is traditionally lower in shoulder months during the fall and spring season, before consumer demand increases during the cold winter months when consumers are using more natural gas.

As I mentioned in a previous post – just like cell phone providers – like AT&T or Sprint – Retail electric providers bid on customers’ electricity business.  These providers can also personalize their bids to each customer or modify their offers and terms as often as they wish.   For instance, electricity retailers may offer exceptionally competitive rates tied to longer term contracts (but we recommend not signing longer than 36 months at the present time) to attract customers in a targeted geographic area or offer a renewable energy product, like energy produced from wind, for the same price as you are currently paying.

It certainly pays to not only get the right offering that fits your home or business needs, but also getting that offering at the right time.  So do some shopping for your home or business during this holiday season and take advantage of fall electric rates.

john l asked:

I am an electrical contractor in fl.I have been asked if I would use my contractors lic. to qualify a business.

What if one of this companies employees does something that causes someone to get hurt, or (god forbid) killed. What would be my responsibilities/liabilities? Could I loose my license?

Other license holders qualify businesses all the time.I should be okay, right?
