Electrical/Landlord issues?

de33vine@sbcglobal.net asked:

Help!!! After a recent storm, the lights in my apt. went out. I was able to get most of the lights back on (via the fuse box). My problems lie in the fact that, they will not come on in 1 room of the apt. I contacted my landlord; who has given me the cold shoulder. My question is should i try to fix this myself (hire out an electrician) or ride it out. I’m afraid she might try to sue me once i move. She’s tight-fisted with money and i think she’ll say that this incident was my fault. It’s an old bldg. and, typically i have to keep warm with a space heater. If i hire an electrician; how much do you think this would cost? Thank you very much; all help would be appreciated!

advice on safety of electrics in house?

sarah asked:

we currently rent a house privately. i am concerned about the safety of our electrics which are located under the stairs. there is an old style fuse box and a number of old circuit breakers. the shower is also connected to this and the only way of operating the shower is by turning the breaker switch off and on. all the wires/switches are located in easy reach of my small children and there is no cover on them to stop the switches and wires being touched, i was wondering if someone who knew about electrics could give me an idea of whether this is legal or not, thanks
